Welcome to Classically Quirky Learning!
This website exists to encourage unique homeschool families in their educational adventures.
I am a former teacher with an MA in Christian Education and 15 years teaching experience. When my son was 12 months old, I left the classroom to stay home with him. I love teaching and always thought that when my kids started school, I would go back for a doctorate degree and teach at a university. Instead, God gave us two special needs kids and I find myself homeschooling. So, instead of a classroom, I write.
Why the title Classically Quirky? Because we educate using mostly the classical method. Every family is different and every child is different, and as such, there is no one methodology that works for every child. Our eldest has high functioning autism and memorizes quickly, so this is perfect for him right now. For more about the classical model, click here or here.
Why quirky? I was a standard classroom teacher, so most of what’s on here relates to that. But, both of my boys are special needs and I have read more about how to teach them than I ever did in my undergrad/masters programs. Both of my boys are so high functioning that they have the ability to blend right in with the crowd…until they are required to sit still. We deal with sensory challenges and logical thinking; executive functioning issues and strict routines; a quiet home and children climbing bookshelves regularly. It’s not how I imagined this parenting adventure, but I wouldn’t trade it for anything!
That’s us. If you have any ideas for things you’d like to see on here or questions about home education, please feel free to contact me!
